What does math have to do with reading?
I am the curriculum coordinator for kindergarten through second grade teachers at an elementary school in North Carolina. We are a Title One school and have a large population of students receiving free and reduced lunch. Most of our students do not have access or exposure to an abundance of quality literature at home.
One of our major goals is to instill a love for learning in each and every student. We are trying to also show our students the importance of skills in the "real world". In order to demonstrate the powerful connection between reading and math we need more resources and text.
We need a math literacy library in our school! This library will provide teachers and students with valuable resources and text to assist students in making those important connections between math and reading. Many students can grasp the basic operations in math, but when asked to apply those concepts to a story or word problem they shut down. By modeling and demonstrating the use of story books to teach math concepts students will see first hand the relevance and applications between math and reading.
Your help and support will ensure that over 400 students in grades kindergarten through second grade will have access and resources to attain the knowledge needed to be successful in reading and math.
