Math Literacy in Action

My students need math children's literature books and center materials, such as highlighters, folders, and post-it notes to improve motivation and comprehension.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Smith's classroom raised $500

My Students

During class, my students are engaged in discussion and discovery through the use of mathematical literature. Books and hands-on materials help them develop a love for math and better mathematical skills and awareness.

I teach math to 6th grade students at a Title 1 school in Oklahoma.

My students are energetic, social, and need lots of love and support. Most of my students come from low-income families and have already dealt with difficult life circumstances. On March 25, 2015 a tornado ripped through our school and destroyed most of our materials. Our entire school has been displaced to a local church to complete the school year.

My Project

The math literature I am requesting will help students relate mathematical skills we learn in the classroom to real-life scenarios. Books can intrigue and open their eyes to the fact that math is just not something we do in the classroom, but it occurs in the real world. Application of math is a higher order skill that can be mastered through the use of hands-on materials and math literature. We will use the books and materials to work in math centers in order develop real-life problem solving skills and social math awareness.

You can help replace part of what was taken by the tornado.

I am trying to create a classroom as similar to our former classroom, in order to provide stability and structure in the midst of the storm. My students need to feel safe and secure, and providing them with materials to learn again will assist in that process. Donors make such an important impact in the education of a child, so I thank you in advance for your donations, support, and prayers.
