See what Ms. Harris is requestingMy students need math literature books to further illustrate basic and complex math skills. These books will be shared primarily as read-alouds.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My project title, Math Lit. 101, may bring back memories of those early college years of being introduced to basic content in varied subjects. This project request will aid in doing the same for my students. Establishing the core fundamentals for complex ideas is the overall goal.
As a DC Public School Math/Science teacher, I often have to perform like a magician.
With little or no resources, I sometimes have to create illusions without the needed smoke and mirrors. The students require more than the textbook approach to instruction. The school system provides the minimum and teachers have to create the maximum. Even 10-years-old, with all the technology and gadgets at their finger tips, my fifth graders will still enjoy a good old fashion read-aloud that captures their attention and sparks the imagination. They are always extremely eager to further demonstrate comprehension by performing excerpts from the stories.
These math literature books will further develop their reading, listening, math, logic/reasoning, and writing skills all in one giant swoop. The students won't know what hit them as math awareness is indirectly taught and intensified. The variety of titles available in this set will allow for a multitude of skills to be addressed and analyzed. Titles like A Remainder of One (multiplication/division), Grandfather Tang's Story (geometry, spatial sense), and Jim and the Beanstalk (proportions/measurement). The real world-based themes in the story lines will also increase their interest level in reading similar stories about other math topics. These books have vivid pictures, amusing characters, witty dialog, and problem solving adventures. It is a winner takes all position for this classroom teacher.
The great titles associated with this project will cover many math skills and concepts in very interesting ways.
Further examining how the story lines are developed will also allow us to write our own math stories at the end of the year. This project will reinforce math, reading, and writing skills simultaneously. All we need now is benefactor who appreciates Math Lit. 101.
