Students learn and understand when they are given the opportunity to engage, explore, reflect, and share their work with others. Our math curriculum at E.K. Powe promotes these practices to encourage students to "construct" meaning in math and hence understand and truly acquire the skills. The staff at E.K. Powe Elementary educates a diverse community of 456 Kindergarten through 5th grade students from five urban neighborhoods in Durham, North Carolina. Eighty-six percent of our students receive a free or reduced lunch, 65% of our students are African American, 5% are multi-racial, 20% speak Spanish as their primary language and 10% are of European descent. In order to constuct and explore, students use a variety of manipulatives. These range from geometic blocks to calculators. Our school personnel has been dedicated to get these needed supplies into our rooms, but often, as classroom teachers move or leave the system, materials are misplaced or lost. Consequently new teachers entering the building scramble to get their needed supplies, which adds to the normal "stress" of beginning a new, demanding job. From research done by members of our math committe, we have learned that other schools have had success "building" math labs. Through negotiations with our principal we have secured a perfect location for an E.K. Powe "Math Lab". The next step is to enourage our teachers to bring all their manipulatives and math materials to this space, so that we can inventory, organize and then redistribute the materials to everyone in the building without the stress and inequities of previous years. Finally, we are now in need of containers of various sizes to help with this reorganization. We will need approximately 20-30 plastic boxes to get a start on building our new E.K. Powe Math Lab to benefit all the students at E.K. Powe.
