My students need a math interactive gaming system, a buzzer system, write and erase boards, dry erase markers, 4 timers, and construction papers for the math competition.
Have you ever wondered why some students struggle more than others during math? Some students consider math challenging while others find it fun! Being afraid of math has always been a problem. However, what if we could change their minds? Wouldn't you find a way? Well, I did!
My school is a high needs one in a community of low-income and unemployed families.
Some teachers at our school came up with an innovative way to motivate our students and increase parent involvement. With the new Common Core Standards, our focus has shifted towards having each grade level focus on a major area. In math, the Grade 3 focus is multiplication. Grades 4 and 5 focus on fractions. To get students motivated and parents to become more actively involved in their children's education, we decided to host a Math Jeopardy Competition for Grades 3 through 5.
We are hoping to use a math interactive software. This will allow students to see that math can be fun even through a game show (same as JEOPARDY on TV)! We would love our donors to help support this project and let the students and parents know that they are not alone! We thank our donors in advance.
My Project
Our Math Competition comprises of three rounds. The first round is the visuals preliminary portion. Students will read math problems on a card. For example, 6 x 5 = _ . The problems will vary according to grade levels. Therefore, we will need write and wipe boards, markers and construction paper.
The second round is the auditory semi-finals. Students who have moved on to the semi-finals will listen to math problems which they will need to hear and think about before giving an answer. The top 5 from each grade will move on to the finals.
The final round, MATH JEOPARDY, is the most exciting part! Students will feel as though they are on a game show. It will be most similar to JEOPARDY with Alex Trebek on TV. The interactive software, the write and erase boards, and the buzzing system will bring this competition to life! Having the software on a large screen and the buzzing lights will get students excited to compete with their peers!
Not only will students compete, but they will become more proficient in math! My students need a math interactive gaming system, a buzzer system, write and erase boards, dry erase markers, 4 timers, and construction papers for the math competition.
This project is important because we have seen our students' fears of math.
The students have already started to gear up for the MATH JEOPARDY and are studying their materials. Even though it's a competition, many of our students are learning their time tables, square roots, and fractions.
It just goes to show that anyone can learn and do whatever they put their mind to! Our students need this exposure to motivate them while their parents need to see the importance of learning!
