My students need base math journals, math card/boardgames, Magna-Tiles for engineering, addition/subtraction puzzles, and cooperative board games for Math Workshop.
Math IS magic! Though the real word is rich in hands-on math applications, most 6-year-old children view math as a concept limited to workbook pages. This project will expand their understanding of math as a vital tool in their everyday lives and build their skills in an exciting way.
My students are predominantly English Language Learners at a Title I elementary school.
Our school is located in a technological epicenter, a hotbed of entrepreneurship and creativity. Our students come from an ethnically diverse community and their cultural heritages enrich our school community.
My Project
My students need base math journals, math card/boardgames, Magna-Tiles for engineering, addition/subtraction puzzles, and cooperative board games for Math Workshop. If you entered the classroom when these materials were being used, you would see EVERYONE engaged and learning! Why? Choice! Students will get to choose between a handful of activities each day. Some will involve discussion, others engineering of structures or memory challenges, and yet other activities will have students calculating sums and differences with friends. How? We will be using LEGO bricks, Magna-Tiles, and geoboards for building/problems solving, magnetic base 10 blocks for place value and partner-based games, and math memory/puzzles for fact fluency. Math journals will have students writing, labeling, and diagramming in math. Literacy is interwoven in most of the activities because reading in the content areas is vitally important.
All of the materials I am requesting will deepen my students' understanding of mathematical principles and allow me to work with small groups of students to instruct and enrich learners at their individual levels.
Manipulatives in the hands of a child mean endless possibilities!
I want my students coming to school excited and ready to make creations, solve problems, and work together. By learning math concepts through games and exploration, my students won't realize how hard they are working since they will be too busy having fun! With the materials we receive, I will be able to model how to plan, problem solve, create, and work effectively with others which are skills vital to success for all students!
