Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students walk into our classroom every day excited for the new challenges that await them that day. Each day they are reminded that they were selected to be in my class because I asked for the best students in the school and that's exactly what I got. I let them know that they can do anything if they believe in themselves as much as I believe in them.

I teach at a Title I school in Las Vegas where more than half of our students are on free or reduced lunch.

Many of their families struggle just to make ends meet. You would never know it from the passion and enthusiasm they show each morning when they come to our classroom. They want to be here because they know that if they give their best, they can achieve anything in life.

My Project

Math is a real struggle for elementary school children. Every year they are asked to know more and more, and to learn these concepts in new and confusing ways. Some of the hardest concepts for kids are partial numbers (decimals and fractions). Not only do these concepts require a deeper level of number sense, but often times they are taught in a way that turns children off to math because it can be somewhat boring.

While it's true that math can be difficult and boring, it doesn't have to be in actuality.

There are ways to get kids interested in math. If you can make math into more of a game than a school subject, you are going to hook those students who are struggling with the concept. These tools that I'm requesting will make these math concepts more fun and more concrete. Not only will children be able to see these decimals in a new light, but they will have the ability to practice this skill in a way that is fun. The Decimal Slider Boards are going to be a huge help in getting children to see what happens when you multiply or divide numbers by a power of ten. The simple act of sliding the pointer on the board will not only provide the child with a visual representation, but it will also be fun. The Decimal Activity station will allow children to practice their decimal skills in a center that's free of stress and the glancing eye of peers and the teacher. It's amazing what the power of self-checking can do for one's education. This kit will give the kids the opportunity to do this in a very non-threatening way.
