Our school has the highest ESL population in our district. 33% of our students see English as their second language. Both parents usually work and do not speak English so there is little or no support from home for homework.
Teachers are their only English contact and the only place where they can learn academics.
Students depend on us to give them an education without help from outside sources.
School is their only learning environment in English. They depend on teachers to provide the best academic environment that they can. Teachers need to every minute to count academically, because this is the student's only chance at learning.
My Project
I teach 4th grade and this year I am offering an after school math group where struggling students learn concepts in small groups. These students have flourished in the three weeks I have been teaching three classes a week. However, they need more! They need hands-on manipulatives that teach greater numbers.
One of my students actually took off his shoes and said he needed his toes to count past ten.
This kit would give my struggling students hands-on manipulatives to tackle the hardest math concepts. For instance, one boy will finally be able to do subtraction with zeros because of the hands-on subtraction regrouping center in this kit . Two girls will finally be able to understand how to decide if a story problem uses subtraction or addition because of the Learning Numeracy center that comes in the kit. Another boy will finally learn that fourteen minus six is eight instead of seven because he won't be using his fingers to do subtraction. He will have place value blocks that help him see the difference. The star pupil will be my lowest boy, who puts up both hands when it is time for addition so he can start using his fingers. This kit will get him to think abstractly with the Math Talks and Number Strings that are in the kit.
All of my students will benefit from repeated practice that doesn't involve fingers or toes. It will allow them concrete examples and teach numeracy in the best possible way.
4th grade is pivotal year and many students fall behind. This kit would allow me to keep struggling students proficient or on level. Without this kit, these students will fall hopelessly behind and enter fifth grade well below proficiency.
