This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second grade teacher at a low income school. I have been teaching at my school for the past four years and continually strive to improve my classroom in order to provide my students with the best learning experiences.
I would like to improve my math center and lessons. Math provides hands-on learning experiences and the use of materials and manipulatives is important. It would be great to have some enriching manipulatives that will help my students further their mathematical understanding.
With the geometry overhead kit and shapes set, I can provide exciting lessons and hands on learning. The shapes would be great to display and pass around the class. Students would be able to see and understand the differences between 2D and 3D shapes instead of having to visualize. In addition, the magnetic pattern blocks would be great to use for demonstrating various patterns that will help build a algebraic foundation.
Money is sometimes a difficult concept to understand. By using magnetic coins students will be able to see and count the coins that I am holding. They will not have a difficult time trying to see the coins in my hand. I will be able to easily display them on the board.
During math class, I try to use the white boards a much as possible, but it has become a hassle because students are always asking for a tissue to erase their boards. If they each had a white board eraser it would be great. I would not have to worry about supplying them with tissues, that will eventually end up on the floor. The erasers will allow them to clean their boards faster and get ready for the next problem.
These materials will definitely improve our math lessons and provide us with more opportunities to think about math.
