Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every day, I get to hear questions from my curious third graders as they explore math and the world around them. I watch them struggle through new concepts and become so excited when something finally clicks! When we are able to go back to teaching in person, I want to be prepared as possible to meet all of their needs.

I have many students who are below grade level and need to experience math in a variety of ways--on paper, a whiteboard, with pictures, manipulatives, etc., because the more variations with which I can present math to them, the more likely they will be engaged and understand the math!

A lot of my students are English Language Learners, too. This means that visuals and manipulatives for math become incredibly important so we can both overcome our language barriers. I also have some students who are on grade level or higher that need a push! I want to have a classroom that is welcoming and caters to all of their needs so they each can experience success this year in my math class.

My Project

In third grade we spend a lot of time learning important life skills--multiplication, division, and telling time! My students are curious and eager to learn, but need the proper tools to do so.

An important part of our classroom is being comfortable making mistakes and learning from them--my students are more engaged and much more willing to make mistakes and take risks in learning when it can be done on a whiteboard or with fun math manipulatives.

White boards allow for students to easily erase and fix mistakes while math manipulatives, such as counters and animals (that relate to English class!), will help us demonstrate groups for solving multiplication and division problems. The dice will help us play fun games that push us to get faster at our multiplication and division facts, along with addition and subtraction that we are still working on.

For telling time, the dry erase clocks for each student will help make learning time so much more accessible, personalized, and fun! All of these materials are things we will use whole group as a class, but also in small groups where we work on math skills that need extra attention. Finally, as a first year teacher, I need help in creating a warm, welcoming environment that inspires my students to learn all the math they can!
