This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Every day is a day to learn in my role as a math support teacher at my school. I am no longer supporting one class of students, but all students who need additional support in all the grades at my school! In addition to supporting students, I have been tasked to share some resources with the teachers at my site!
The purpose of math is not to learn procedures, but to make connections between numbers, see patterns, and see if problems can be figured out!
I am a requesting a copy of Numeracy Problem Strings books in grades 2 through 5, along with 4 copies of Building Powerful Numeracy for a book study at my school site. Teachers at my site and I will deep dive into learning how to help students build powerful mathematics reasoning skills. We will focus on helping students build additive and multiplicative reasoning so that they don't try and memorize facts or algorithms, but build reasoning skills and see patterns in numbers.
As a staff, we hope to become more proficient in writing problem strings that will help all our students to become thinkers, not mimickers of math!
