Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In my classroom, students meet on the carpet for various reasons. During Math, I conduct rotations where I have three groups of students meet me on the carpet to teach them the daily concept/skill. During reading, we sit on the carpet, as well, to read aloud literature and have class discussions. Lastly, when my students are on inclement weather and need to have indoor recess, they meet on the carpet to play board games.
At the beginning of the school year, I have my students explore how math is everywhere around us.
We discuss objects, items, and various things that relate to math in and out of the classroom. I have them get into pairs and think how those objects relate to math. We create a list together, and they choose six to eight objects or items to produce a small booklet at home. They need a catchy title for the cover and for each sheet/page, the students need to draw a picture and write five sentences how it relates to math. They ought to use math language, numbers, and provide specific examples to show their thinking.
My students are special because they all have a different way of thinking and explaining math. Some are more advanced than others where they can explain in detail how objects in the real world apply to mathematics. It's a great way to assess their understanding of math relating to us in the world and how it's everywhere around us!
