This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come to school daily with a drive to learn. My students have specific needs or disabilities ranging from visual impairment, specific learning disabilities, autism, and emotional disturbance. Most students come from a low socioeconomic background which is why I need essential materials. They are also at a disadvantage due to their disabilities. Most of the students in my class are also English learners, and some are relatively new to the country. The community consists of mostly Spanish-speaking families and a small percentage of African-American families.
I support my students in a special day mathematics classroom and they are expected to meet grade-level standards with the support and accommodations I provide.
In order to have access to the curriculum, my students need various ways to learn: visually, auditorily, kinesthetically, and/or tactically. As an educator, I want to make sure my students have the same opportunities as their peers in regular general education classrooms.
My Project
Our school provides each classroom with outdated printers that are unable to print color pages. Our rigorous math curriculum provides my students with disabilities the same opportunity to learn grade-level concepts, as long as they are receiving accommodations and supports. My students learn best with manipulatives and colorful visual supports.
A printer that can print colorful and vibrant pages will support my students who need visual support to grasp key mathematical concepts.
We will be able to print pages that can color code key details for students to solve word problems. We can also use the printer to print specific colors for my students who are visually impaired.
