My Project

We are so fortunate at our school to have access to two beautiful community gardens. Volunteers help to create beautiful, welcoming, and productive spaces that students can use. This year, we were fortunate enough to participate in harvesting plants, as we measured, graphed, and identified shapes. My goal is to further our involvement next year by helping with planning, planting, and maintaining the gardens.

There are so many ways to introduce and practice mathematical concepts and skills in the garden.

With these materials, my students will be able to practice counting, comparing, addition, subtraction, fractions, geometry, graphing, and measurement. Place-based education helps students make connections between the math standards and their value and purpose within their communities. It is an empowering tool to provide for students.

Not only are students practicing essential standards, but they are learning science standards as well. For example: What are living and nonliving in the garden, what do living things need to survive, what kinds of life cycles do we observe, and how do people impact their environment?

Finally, it exposes students to healthy foods and sustainable practices. My hope for my students is simple: to be inspired to be future gardeners or mathematicians or community volunteers who want to make the world a more healthy, beautiful place.
