There are typically two kinds of middle school math students, the one who wants to show off all they know and the student who struggles and needs a variety of strategies demonstrated. A document camera will help both of these students push their understanding to a higher level.
I teach 6th and 7th grade math at an inner-city middle school in the Boston Public Schools.
My classroom is a special education inclusion classroom with a mixture of English language learners, advanced learners and students with learning disabilities in math, reading and writing. My students benefit from a variety of learning tools that engaged them visually and provide them with multiple strategies. Demonstrate your understanding! I ask my students daily to demonstrate and explain their work to each other. Students love to show off what they know and explain their strategies to their classmates. A document camera projects student work on screen making it simple and quick for students to show their work. A document camera also makes note taking and lesson demonstrations more clear and concise.
The math classroom landscape has changed greatly over the years. Long gone are the "drill the skill" lessons where you are taught how to solve a math problem and then practice it over and over until you can do it in your sleep. Our classroom is built on discovery and exploration. As a teacher I act as a guide and allow the students to work with each other to discover formulas and equations that are pivotal to their math understanding. A document camera will allow students the ability to show what they have discovered to other students which will stimulate math discussions. With this type of learning students are more engaged and stimulated in the mathematics in turn creating a deeper understanding. The Elmo Document camera can also be used to show manipulatives like blocks for geometry or dice for probability. Many of my special needs students learn best through visual learning. A document camera will project the manipulatives on screen for more clear instruction.
Your donation will allow for students to show their work immediately, to create math discussions and to ultimately create a deeper understanding of math.
My students will become more interested in the math lesson and build a strong foundation in the content.
