This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a Title I school, which means about 80 percent of the student body come from low-income families. It can be difficult at times to edify that love of reading to fourth graders who view reading as a chore and not an enjoyment.
During the school year, I love seeing how my students transform into recreational, novel in hands, chapter book readers.
They have learned (without realizing it) to truly enjoy reading literature that they can relate to. Students enthusiastically discuss and respond in small or whole group the story's elements. I have seen my students' confidence and stamina increase along with their comprehension and written expression.
My Project
Read aloud books that target math concepts will be a great way to engage my young mathematician readers. I will use the read-aloud books as a closure or an opening activity to the math lessons. Students will hear real-life practical application stories to math concepts that they experience in their environment such as seeing patterns, dividing and multiplying items or food, et cetera. Students sometimes have a difficult time relating to math concepts because it is not practical to real life. These selected books will help ease some of their anxiety or frustration. I hope you will donate to this project.
