I am a first grade teacher and member of the Teach for America program at El Dorado Elementary School, part of the San Francisco Unified School District. At El Dorado, approximately 58% of students receive a free lunch and 30% are learning English as a second language.
In the modern age, math skills are becoming more and more critical for success. While the school district provides me with the text books and worksheets to review basic math concepts, I want to make math more relevant, exciting and engaging for my class.
The students in my class work at many different levels in math. Once the lesson for the day is presented and the workbook completed I would love for my students to be able to work with a partner or in small groups to play a game that reinforces our math lessons.
Not only would this give them the opportunity to practice the skill in a new way, but also the opportunity to develop their team skills. (i.e., sharing, turn taking,etc.). I am also hoping that this "partner" time, will allow me to work more closely with students who are struggling with their math lessons. With this additional one on one time, I believe I can prevent these young students from losing interest in math at an early age.
I want my students to succeed and feel confident in their math skills and I am confident that this will form the foundation for future achievements.
Thank you for your consideration.
