This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I serve quite a remarkable and unique group of children. Despite the majority of my students coming from low-income households, they all demonstrate such a powerful desire to learn and push their thinking.
My students are an incredible group of hardworking, resilient, and collaborative children, and their drive toward defying all odds and accomplishing things that may have once seemed out of reach is what keeps me coming back each and every day.
As a fifth year math teacher, it has always been my goal to not only make it fun and engaging but also applicable to the real world. In a classroom where mistakes are accepted and encouraged, students learn to challenge each other's thinking, forcing them to think critically about all possible outcomes. My students love to engage in math talk for this reason!
My Project
As a departmentalized math teacher, I teach only math to more than 80 diverse and wonderful students.
My student's learning needs are just as diverse as their learning styles and it's important for me to ensure that their independent workstations are engaging and aligned to the skills that they need.
These Instant Learning Centers, Geometric Shapes, and Part-Whole Fluency Cards are not only ready to go, which creates less preparation work for me, but they are also manageable for students to be able to complete independently or with a partner. These stations will mostly be used for my intervention groups, which are 1-2 grade levels below where they should be performing. They need constant reinforcement and exposure to the skills in these games, such as money, geometry, measurement, and decomposing numbers. The Fold and Learn Geometric Shapes will be a great way for students to practice finding the nets of shapes. The Addition and Subtraction Instant Learning center will allow students to decompose numbers and work on their number sense. The Measurement Instant Learning Center helps students work on reading various types of graphs, which is an important foundational skill.
