This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The student leaders in our classroom come from very diverse populations. Our school is located in California and considered Title I, with more than 70% of students currently receiving free or reduced-price lunch. More than half of the students at our school live in low-income housing and 65.8% are considered economically disadvantaged. We also have a population of students from military families. I am grateful for the opportunity to teach first grade again this year! The students in my first grade class are very energetic, loving, brave, and curious about scientific investigations. There are very many factors about school that make us happy, and among them are hands-on projects and experiments, becoming mathematicians, and Go Noodle dance parties!

The students in my class are only 6-7 years old, but are already filled with curiosity, wonder, and are ready to take on whatever first grade throws at them.

I feel so privileged that others value their educational needs and genuine love for learning as much as I do and I am thrilled to see where these sweet, small children take themselves as leaders in their worlds.

My Project

My students love Math Game Monday! They seriously talk about it all week and ask for it each day with the understanding there is a slim chance that we will be able to play again! Right now we have a ton of simple games like War, Race to 100, Flashcards, and Base 10 number puzzles that they enjoy, but our Math Game Monday cart could use a new makeover!

With a new cart whose drawers aren't cracked, bins to store the optional games, and new games to fill their Math Game Monday cart, my first graders will find so much new and improved fun during our favorite time of the week!

Our current seven-drawer rolling cart was a hand me down from a retiring teacher that I am so grateful for; however, it has had its last days. Some of the drawers are so broken that games now sit on our supply shelves next to the cart. With the bins and cart, I will be able to reorganize their game options so that they are easily and safely accessible to students when needed. When easier to reach, too, I will be able to use the games for math centers as well, not just one day a week!

I am so grateful for the games I have purchased thus far from TPT; however, with a TPT gift card I will be able to purchase games that are on my wish list to add to our new cart. Among these games are cards to go with the Jenga blocks. I will use the Jenga blocks to write missing part addition and subtraction facts on one stack, and balancing equations on the other. These two skills remain the most difficult for students so I am confident being able to play will help!
