Hi, I'm a teacher in San Jose, California. Next year I will have a new class of 20 eager second graders. My proposal is to add some hands-on materials to enrich my math curriculum. While our text books do a good job of covering all the basic skills required, some students need a multitude of visual aids and manipulatives to learn important concepts. Students also learn more when working with a partner or group to solve a problem. Math manipulatives foster this vital partner and group work. My proposal includes a rich variety of teaching aids and manipulatives to enrich all aspects of the math curriculum - geometry, place value, time, money, number sense, and fractions. These materials will be used during whole group and small group instruction. Many will also be utilized by students who finish their book work early. Any contribution to this project would be greatly appreciated by myself and my students. Thank you very much for taking the time to read my proposal to improve the math curriculum in my classroom.
