Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"What is your favorite and least favorite subject?" This was a recent prompt for the second graders in our classroom. The student responses were not so surprising, but still disheartening. Math topped the Least Favorite list by a landslide!

What?

We were in the middle of the most exciting unit of the year: Two-D and Three-D shapes! This is usually a time for students to explore shapes and get a taste of how math can be a rich part of our everyday lives. I suddenly realized the real reason my students were not enjoying math. They were not interacting with math in a hands-on way! Our school community lives just inside the Dallas city limits. Many of my students play in neighborhoods that most people avoid after dark. Of the twenty-four students in my classroom, only a handful spoke English as their first language. Besides being able to read English, critical thinking skills and math fluency are the biggest rocks we have to move every year. If the students hate math, how can we push those rocks out of the way? THE PROBLEM: We have small amount of Math Manipulatives to share among 99 2nd Grade students.

My Project

With the supplies requested, each student will have their own set of shapes, tiles and fraction circles in front of them. These supplies will be enough for all four second grade classrooms. Our English Language Learners will have something in their hands to bridge the gap between what I am saying and what they are able to understand. And I know that math will become fun for them! Why is that so important? Students who are excited about the subject matter will put more effort into learning. This is important because it takes such a tremendous effort to come to school everyday and be motivated to learn when you only understand fifty percent of what you hear. The other fifty percent can be made up with visual cues and tangible examples that can be understood without language.

I would love to hear a buzz of excitement as the students come in from lunch to start math, not the usual groans.

Inquiry-based exploration is the key for my students to learn to love math. Students who love math learn more. I know my students want to learn. As one of my students wrote: "My least favorite subject is math because I don't get it and it is hard. Sometimes I wish I didn't have to go to it. But I can learn if I try."
