Math for Justice: Using Numbers to Understand Inequality

Help me give my students them the tools to understand and challenge social issues—starting with data and math.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Pettaway's classroom raised $950

My Project

I teach an amazing group of 7th grade students who are eager to learn and engage with the world around them. They come from diverse backgrounds and bring unique perspectives into the classroom. Many of my students come from historically underserved communities and are passionate about making a difference. I want to give them the tools to understand and challenge social issues—starting with data and math. This project empowers students not only with math skills but also with awareness.

This project blends math education with social justice by helping students explore racial inequality through data analysis.

We will examine real-world statistics around income gaps, education access, incarceration rates, housing discrimination, and more—all through a mathematical lens.

The materials I’m requesting include:

Tablets to analyze and interpret complex data sets and research.

Chart paper, markers, and rulers for visualizing data through graphs and infographics.

Access to books and articles (age-appropriate) that provide background on historical and current racial injustices.

Project supplies so students can present findings in meaningful ways (poster boards, printers, folders).

By working on this project, students will:

Analyze real-world data sets related to race and justice.

Learn to calculate percentages, ratios, mean/median/mode, and identify trends.

Build graphs and models that communicate their findings visually.

Collaborate on group presentations that connect math to equity and advocacy.
