Help me give my students a math fluency kit. This will be used as a daily activity during our math block to develop efficiency, flexibility, and accuracy in students’ grasp of basic math facts.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are full of energy and eager to learn. They live in a poverty-stricken area with the stress that goes along with this. Many of our students' parents have struggled with education themselves and find it difficult to support their children's education. It is our jobs to get our students to LOVE learning and show them the importance of it.
Our students are determined to succeed; they just need the proper support to guide them.
I am the math lead teacher in a Title I school where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Our school has struggled to compete with other schools outside the city of Philadelphia.
My Project
I am requesting a math fluency kit for multiple 1st grade classrooms to use. The kit comes with math manipulatives that support building number sense. Some of the materials that they will be using are Rekenreks, subitizing cards, and counters. Each kit also comes with a teacher's guide with many lessons for using the math manipulatives.
Building math fluency should be a daily, year-long activity.
This helps develop efficiency, flexibility, and accuracy in our students’ grasp of basic math facts. The good news is this can be done in less than 10 minutes a day!
Building math fluency consists of two major components: Number Strings and Math Talks. Each one of these routines can be done each day for 10 to 15 minutes to enhance the current curriculum and student math fluency. They can be used in whole group and/or small groups as a way to differentiate instruction.
