Help me give my students a grade 3 math fluency kit. This will increase their number sense. Students need a concrete way of seeing numbers. This will assist with the concrete representation.
My students are incredible humans. They are all indigenous, Blackfeet and Crow, going to school here on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Browning Montana. This is my second year with my students, as I looped from 2nd grade. I have seen such incredible gains especially in math and reading.
Each student has overcame historical trauma and personal issues in their home lives, as many of them do not have stable homes.
They come to school every single day with a bright mind and a positive attitude. They are resilient, as even though they have such immense issues in their lives, they can make the best of it with each new day. They are hard workers and often won't hand in work until it is perfect. They strive for excellence in hopes of making their hometown a better place.
My students work in guided math and guided reading workshop groups. They have a love for education. We implemented a "Shape Up 150" Program in our curriculum, and the students love getting up to do physical movement throughout instruction.
My Project
Students in my classroom need a better way to see numbers to gain a better understanding of number sense. With this Math Talks Fluency Kit, my students will be able to have concrete representations of numbers.
For example, the number strings that come with this kit will assist students by having the given multiplication problem on a number line and created on a number string.
Students will be challenged to not only create the given multiplication problem, but they will be able to talk through the problem.
This kit will be used as a station in our guided math program. This will be used at teacher station, which will be assisted by the teacher, but student lead.
