My Students

I have a classroom of smart, energetic, and active students who are so eager to learn. By incorporating physical education activities into ALL areas EVERY day, learning will be exciting and fun. Plus, students will develop healthy habits while using PE to teach math and language skills.

I teach in a great school!

We are a low-income school that offers breakfast for students. We have a culturally diverse population. We have students on many academic levels. My students are part of the ALPS program for high-achieving and motivated students. Students must meet certain criterion on a variety of tests in order to be in my classroom. It is crucial that I challenge them and make learning meaningful and fun. Childhood obesity is a national problem. I want to be part of a solution for this problem. Kids at my school and in my class need to exercise both their minds and their bodies. I want to do all I can to help make my classroom and my school healthier, smarter, and happier!

My Project

How cool would it be to motivate learning math and language arts while helping kids to be active and healthy? Last year, my 2nd graders tracked my steps with my personal FitBit. Each day we recorded the number of steps I took. We looked at the numbers and analyzed data. Some discussions were as simple as, "Is this an even or odd number?" or "What number do you see in the 1000's place?" Other problems involved adding weekly totals, using data to make predictions, and looking for patterns. This was great, but it would even be better if kids could gather and analyze personal data. Isn't this a great way to sneak in math skills? Our class also keeps "Math Journals". In our MATH journals, we WRITE about ways to use PHYSICAL EDUCATION in our daily lives. Having activities to use daily makes this both engaging and educational. Staying fit and making healthy choices are both skills I want to incorporate into my classroom. Add establishing great habits, and you have a perfect project!

Mixing Physical Education with academics is a winning project!

Tracking steps and analyzing the data/numbers will reinforce math skills by making math real! Just as importantly, kids will be motivated to walk/exercise more. This will benefit their lives now and help establish healthy habits in years to come. Adding a variety of ways to increase steps will make exercising more fun and provide many ways to incorporate math and language arts into everyday life.
