I teach gifted students in a lower income school. Students from around the valley test into this program. They must reach a certain benchmark in order to qualify for ALPS (Accelerated Learning Program for Students). Many of my 2nd graders are reading at or above a 6th grade level. Finding reading material for them can be challenging because often their levels do not match age appropriateness. When materials are relevant, interest piques. Informational text and current events written at their level provides a great vehicle for further research and discussion. However, kids are kids. My students are 7 or 8 years old and thrive on fun. Plays, pop-ups, and fun stories by great authors excite students. My students benefit from reading alone, with a partner, in a small group or with the whole class. Sometimes they enjoy just listening to me read them a story or following along as they listen to an audio book. Again, my students need a variety and they need to be challenged.
