I am a third grade math teacher at Walnut Bend Elementary who is looking for a new way to motivate my students in math. I teach two classes with about 26 students per class. About half of my students are Katrina evacuees who have missed weeks of school due to the disaster and are very behind in math. The other half is stressed out and nervous about their upcoming TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) test in April. Both groups need to review those math skills. Why not review in a fun way by having a "Math Field Day"? Wouldn't it be fun for them to play bowling, ring toss, sack races, and other fun field day activities all while reviewing math? For example, students could play ring toss and review estimation by rounding certain numbers taped to the rings and throwing them into the correct answer. Students would win tickets and trade them in for prizes. They could review all their basic math skills while having a blast with their teacher, parents, and friends. So much learning would be going on while the students are having a blast! To top it off, they're getting exercise! The equipment could be used year after year right before TAKS. We could even invite the other third grade classes! Support this project and many kids will be smiling around TAKS time.
