My Students

My awesome second graders come from a very low socioeconomic background with some falling below the poverty line. They are mainly English language learners (80%), and many of them live in homes which house multiple families under the same roof.

On average, 2 or 3 students in my classroom are considered homeless and struggle to find suitable housing.

They qualify for assistance through The McKinney Vento Homeless Assistance Act. Some of my students are latchkey children. Some of these seven- and eight-year-olds have the sole responsibility of taking care of their younger siblings while their parents are working. Many of their parents have more than one job.

Our school is Title I and 80% of the children receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch. My children have extremely limited access to technology in their homes, yet, with all these obstacles, my students come to school with much enthusiasm and an eager desire to learn. As a teacher, I am very passionate about bringing STEAM to my classroom on a weekly basis. I feel that STEM provides students with the 4 C's: collaboration, critical thinking, creativity and communication.

My Project

Learning about math starts from day one. When kids are in preschool, they learned number recognition and how to count. As they enter the grade school, the skills progression continues. “Studies suggest that children whose families are involved in their education demonstrate higher academic achievement, more positive attitudes toward school, and better homework habits than those of less-involved families (Epstein 1985; Henderson 1987; Jeynes 2005).” This is why I strongly believe that involving parents from an early age will help to foster and reinforce these math skills to the fullest. For this reason, I am requesting for family engagement math pack. The pack includes easy to follow instructions in both English and Spanish. The pack comes with 15 different hands on games, including; number cards, write and wipe mats, dice and much more. These games will reinforce the 2nd grade math skills and standards (number and operation based ten) that are being taught in class. By involving parents I feel that everyone wins. This will also help to boost students achievement. The results will be charted through included assessments and teacher informal observation.
