My Students

I teach in Lowell, MA. The students in my classroom live in an urban, low-income city. They have limited resources and have even less experience with technology. My students need the motivation to help them grow in and outside of the classroom.

My students all qualify for free or reduced-price lunch under Title I.

The students in my school are hard-working, yet they have basic skills with technology. To help them grow and learn more about STEM jobs, math concepts, and prepare for the future we need to be able to connect concepts with the real world.

My Project

My students are interested in the subject of math in the classroom, but I am not sure if they know how to connect what we do in class to a larger scale. We talk about where they can use topics, but unless they can see someone doing something positive or cool they have a hard time making those deeper connections.

Math can be more than just workbook problems and practicing the skills over and over again.

With these magazines, students will be able to see people doing things to help others, creating something new, or something just downright cool with math! For students who need that extra push to fall in love with the subject, this might be just what they need. We can talk about how people are really helping their communities in class with these Scholastic magazines. Students can also picture themselves doing things like this in the future and finding that spark they were missing all along. Please help my students get some math magazines and show them there is more to the subject than just solving problems!
