I am biased, but I teach the best students at the best school in the world. Our students face numerous challenges, but they still work their hardest to achieve their goals daily.
Our school is a K-8 school, and is considered high poverty by the state, with roughly 700 students, who are largely special needs or have a parent serving in the military.
We have the second highest population of special needs children, ESE children, and children who have a father, mother, or both parents in the military in our district.
We are a Title I school with minimal resources. Every teacher at our school works to provide our students with a first class education, while helping them to overcome the many obstacles in their lives.
Our students are in before and after school care, due to one or both parents serving in the military and often deploying. Our students experience the transient life of military families and are often having to adjust to new environments, expectations, and education standards. I strive to help my students transition fluidly and work hard to catch them up on the curriculum they've missed.
My Project
One of the greatest challenges we educators face today is keeping the interest of our students in a seemingly boring subject matter. The latest craze to hit our towns have been escape rooms. These puzzle based challenges force groups of people to work together and solve logic puzzles in a specific time limit in order to "escape" the room they are located. People of all ages are fascinated by these challenges.
I want to create escape room style math challenges to assess students' progress in a fun and engaging manner.
My students need mini lockers, combination locks, cypher wheels, UV markers and flashlights, and more materials to solve math based puzzles and "escape" our classroom. These materials will help me to create challenging, but fun puzzles for student teams to solve based on the current math skill we are learning. These escape room challenges will help students remain engaged, learn team-building skills, use appropriate social skills to work with others and show their understanding of the math concepts we are studying. With the materials listed in this grant, the possibilities of activities are endless.
