My Project

Help me engage my students in an unforgettable learning experience by transforming the classroom into an operating room at "Fantasy Land Hospital." Students will role-play as surgeons to "operate" on math problems, mastering the order of operations through hands-on, immersive activities.

My students love to role-play, and this project leverages their enthusiasm to create an innovative approach to learning math.

The classroom will be transformed into an operating room, complete with hospital-themed decorations and supplies, allowing students to perform mock surgeries on math problems. By taking on the role of surgeons, students will use the order of operations to complete calculations and solve problems in a memorable and engaging way. At "Fantasy Land Hospital," students will wear gloves, hats, and surgical gowns to fully immerse themselves in their roles as surgeons. Then, they will work in teams at 12 operating stations, sectioned off with tablecloths to simulate individual operating rooms. Students will be challenged to "operate" on cartoon characters like Spider-Man and Shrek, who will serve as patients requiring mathematical "surgeries" (e.g., knee surgery or toe surgery).

They will solve math problems tied to the order of operations, writing their final answers on adhesive bandages to prepare patients for post-op and recovery.

The realistic hospital-themed backdrops will be used to heighten the immersive experience. This interactive activity is designed to make learning math fun, memorable, and impactful, ensuring that students gain a strong grasp of the order of operations while developing teamwork and problem-solving skills.

Through a previous grant, I secured funding to purchase a unit on the order of operations. This curriculum has already been a valuable resource in teaching students the foundational concepts they need to succeed. Now, I aim to elevate their learning experience by creating an engaging, real-world application for these skills.
