Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Numbers surround us and are like another language: if you don't have the skills, you may feel left out of the conversation. I may be my students' only math teacher; their parents struggle with lack of education, different math skills,and work schedules to support their children as best as possible.
I have an amazing class.
Our local community is formed overwhelmingly by recent immigrants from Mexico and Central America. My students find themselves living in a bi-cultural and bilingual world. 99% are Latino and they live in the most densely populated city west of the Mississippi. Our elementary school strives daily to serve the unique needs of these students and prepare them for the demands and challenges of thriving in a complex world.
We know we are successful as we have pushed our API to 800. The test scores merely support the evidence we already see of student achievement.
The vast majority of our students receive free or reduced price lunch each day and know the real world challenges that face them.
The barriers they face are real and in their faces. They see the struggles of family members who struggle with long hours, low-paying jobs, and lack of higher education. The parents want their children to experience the best of opportunities and not repeat their own struggles.
My Project
I've thoroughly researched different technological tools to bring into the classroom. Having fancy toys without appropriate application adds little to the learning in the classroom.
Students will be able to access different tools using the tablet. It will greatly expand their access beyond the one functioning classroom computer that we already have.
Students will now be able to access high interest leveled math instruction, skills development, and review. By using quality tools like Khanacademy.org, students can review math content as needed and love earning points by solving math challenges. Teachers love being able to monitor each child's independent growth and seeing exactly how each is successful and where they may need individualized intervention. Tech and teacher together allow for a more focused approach so each learner can achieve more at his or her own level.
Each morning, the students make a pledge "to themselves and who they want to be" to use each day fully to work towards achieving their goals.
They know that there are no shortcuts and that any dream worth having is a dream worth working towards. They have the drive and are now humbly asking that you kindly join us in this journey.
