My students need math manipulatives, like Mini GeoSolids, counters and pattern blocks, for hands-on learning in our math classroom. These students learn best when they have something concrete in their hands.
Try picturing imaginary numbers, cubes, or even a fraction piece. This is very hard for anyone, especially a student that struggles in math class. Try adding numbers that are larger than the amount of fingers you have. It can be challenging especially when you mix up your numbers.
My students are in a full time learning support classroom.
There are 12 students that stay in my room for math, reading, English, science, and history. Most of these students are either autistic or have a specific learning disability in the area of math. They struggle remembering basic concepts and need extra practice to succeed. These students are very capable of completing the work in math, they just need a little help along the way!
My Project
My students will use the manipulatives to give them a visual of their math concepts. My students have a history of working best with visuals and hands on materials. With these tools in the math room I think it will help students learn the concepts and apply them to their problem solving. Each student would be able to hold materials while I am teaching in the classroom. They will be able to see how the math relates to the objects in front of them.
These donations will make my math classroom a more engaging and student-involved class.
The students would be interacting with the materials while learning key concepts. These students do not have a lot of things to call their own and in this classroom it would give them a sense of ownership and responsibility.
