Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The best way for students to learn new concepts and skills is through repeated practice in a variety of forms. Unfortunately, many of our math supplies only provide one or two ways of exploring a concept.
My urban kindergartners love to count!
We count everything from attendance to team points to days of school. We count by ones, twos, fives, and tens. We count forwards and backwards. We are learning how to count objects accurately and practicing organizing objects as we count. Many of these kids come to kindergarten in September with minimal ability to recognize written numerals or count orally to ten. Some of the kids have trouble counting objects under 5. It takes a lot of practice and repeated experiences to build these students' counting skills to where they need to be for first grade.
My Project
These various math materials will allow students to practice counting, number recognition, identifying characteristics of shapes, ordering numbers, and other important math skills in different, engaging ways. Students will be able to stamp a number and then practice writing it. Children can count objects and then "catch" the corresponding numeral in a fishing game. Students can use tactile numerals to build their number recognition skills. Counting requires lots and lots of practice and many of these manipulatives will provide children with this practice in new and exciting ways.
Strong math skills are vital to success in everyday life.
We can't move forward without basic counting skills and understanding of number relationships. Help us practice our developing math skills in a variety of ways. These materials will help us learn math while we're having fun!
