No rows here! Working collaboratively in math has huge benefits to student learning. My students are arranged in small groups daily and work together to tackle engage math problems. Unfortunately, I share two classrooms that do not have whiteboard space to share ideas.
My students are mostly below grade level and benefit greatly from a collaborative, team setting.
Some of them are attempting Algebra for a 2nd or 3rd time. We are a diverse community where there are many different cultures and languages. Some of my students are just learning to grasp English let alone the language of Algebra. Our class sizes are around 30 students and do not allow for much one-on-one.
My Project
My students will be working in groups testing out conjectures and ideas around rich math tasks using large whiteboards. They will be able to share their thinking with the class easily and come to consensus by working together. The new math standards are rigorous and focus on perseverance and critical thinking skills. Large, group whiteboards are the perfect medium for students to work in groups and examine their thinking. They can be easily displayed or wiped clean to start on the next math adventure. I can see my students engaged in communicating their thoughts and conjectures and sharing them confidently for all to see!
This project will open up opportunities for my students by giving them a medium to share their work and thinking.
They will be excited to work out complex math problems together in an engaging, flexible way! My students can't wait to stop using poster paper that cannot be altered once it is written on to using whiteboards that allow exploration freely with colorful markers and the opportunity to adjust their recordings while they make sense of engaging problems.
