My Project
Last year, three students from my school’s 4th grade team were invited to compete at the New York State competition for the math game called 24. To prepare for the game, we practiced and prepared together. It was magical to see how excited our competitors got about math and to watch three very different students build social skills, become good friends, and form a strong team. Suddenly, they were clamoring to learn their factors, using relationships between the numbers. For example, one student was SO excited when she realized that she could figure out her 4 tables by just doubling her 2 tables by 2 and then just double those again to get her 8 tables, viola! The excitement was contagious. Students from across the school were stopping me in the hallway and asking if they could play as well. Teachers were coming to me and asking me what this 24 game was that their students were asking about. The students at my school are so excited to learn and so interested in math!
This project will allow us to have the materials we need to start an official 24 math game club, so that we can spread the magic: learning, team spirit, and love for math.
I predict that the club will be so popular that we will have to add more days and extend it to other grades!
