I am a kindergarten teacher at Tenderloin Elementary in San Francisco. At our school we teach daily math lessons following a standards driven math program. We explore themes such as patterns, sorting, classifying, addition, subtraction, measurement, time, and number concepts.
To teach these ideas and reach as many students as possible it is extremely helpful to use manipulatives, props ,and visual aids. Our population of students is made up largely of second language learners. Many ELL's have an easier time learning number concepts at first because numbers are universal. For this reason I would like to acquire math manipulative's, games, and props to enhance class room activities and centers. These items will not only make math exciting for students who learn quickly but also help students who need more work with basic ideas so that they can go on to learn more.
These items are all versatile and can be used in different ways for different ideas. They can also be used year after year regardless of curriculum.
