Math Centers

My students need more hands-on materials for math centers. The curriculum provided does not have many hands-on manipulatives, so I am hoping to provide more ways students can explore math in the classroom!

My Students

My students attend the only public school in the county! They live in different towns in the county, surrounded by corn fields. The town has about 3,000 people. These kids function as a family and really support each other in the classroom. Even with the support of parents, my class would really benefit from some extra materials that can't be provided by the school or state. They are eager learners and need more technology and hands-on experiences. These materials will make a big difference in the quality of learning.

My Project

Most people learn best visually and kinesthetically, meaning they can actually manipulate materials. Many "aha" moments happen when kids can manipulate math. These materials will allow me to give students independent and partner practice within out math block time. My students this past year were limited more to printed materials that do not last a full school year. These manipulatives will not only last this year, but for years to come. I am excited to allow students the opportunity to use these and watch them learn together. Fractions are extremely difficult to learn without hands-on experiences so this will make learning about fractions easier. The Discovery Cans give students many opportunities for learning throughout the year. The cans give students the ability to choose their activity for the day, which means math centers can be more differentiated. The geometric shapes kit will help kids see and feel the sides and angles. They will be able to measure real objects in their hands, not on a piece of black and white paper! The timer will help students visually see when they need to move to a different activity while I, the teacher, can work one-on-one with students or with small groups.
