Our lively First Graders are halfway through the school year. As we prepare to send them off to Second Grade, we are noticing some lagging skills in the areas of number sense and math fluency. In order for them to solidify these concepts, they have been participating in individualized math centers.
Our elementary is located in the heart of Brooklyn, where the community is extremely impoverished.
The mission of our school is to provide our students with a rigorous and creative academic environment in which they are also given the socio-emotional support necessary to succeed. The classrooms at our school often lack the basic resources and materials that are necessary to our students' success. Since we cannot rely on fundraising from the parent community, we are seeking help from our friends and family!
My Project
The students in our Integrated Co-teaching Classroom have very diverse academic strengths and needs. Their learning styles also vary, and many of them benefit from hands-on, interactive learning. The materials that we are requesting will help our students grasp number sense concepts by engaging them in hands-on activities that can be completed independently during our daily math center time. The Count and Link center will allow our students to grasp number sense by adding and counting links. The Number Grid will allow students to learn numbers all the way to 100 hands on by filling in missing numbers and counting on. The Pop and Add game will allow students to add within 20. These centers are essential because it allows our students to learn different math standards with a hands on approach.
The addition of more math centers to our classroom will allow us to further differentiate our curriculum based on our students' needs.
The centers will provide a fun and engaging way to learn math concepts necessary to prepare our students for Second Grade.
