I shared the quote with my students, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” I believe in helping my students to discover the Mathematics greatest that lives inside them.
My students are mostly from low income, single parent households with a lot of street knowledge and not so much book knowledge or at least that is what they would have you to believe.
I have seen some below grade-level students come in and leave scholars. However, it took a lot of work on their part. My school is in an inner city neighborhood and there are many who believe the only way out is through sports but I say NO.
My Project
My students need supplies such as scientific calculators, a pencil sharpener, paper and markers. My student need class set calculators for our math class. My students are going to make vision boards. If students visualize their goals and have pictorial representation of those goals they are more likely to achieve them. Therefore, my students need all kinds of markers so they can create and decorate their vision boards.
Finally, I requested paper. In my intensive mathematics classes, we have stations where the students participate in DI and I print out the work for each student so that they can save time from writing everything down.
My students will benefit from these donation by passing the state test the first time.
They would have studied and also taken practice test with the same calculator they will be using during the End of Course assessment. In addition, my students will lay out a path of success with vision board made from the art supplies and follow it all the way to graduation and beyond.
More than half of students from low‑income households
