This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are 26 curious and energetic kindergarten boys and girls. They go to school for a full day of learning, so a hands-on approach to reading, math, and science really helps them when they are wiggly! They enjoy listening to stories, singing songs, playing on the playground and learning in school. Growing up in inner-city poses numerous challenges for them, but they are smart children! Having the supplies to help them learn in a fun and interactive way helps to close the achievement gap that many of the students face.
My Project
Since we all have different strengths and weaknesses, along with different levels of mastery, working in small groups is a great way to build skills, develop friendships and allow students to help one another with learning. We currently have books that contain well loved stories and rhyming stories, but nothing that relates to specific math concepts.
This project will complete our listening center by providing headphones as well as books on CD with a MATH focus for the students to use; expanding our listening library to include math concepts, providing literature about counting, measurement, more and less, as well as division.
The phonics included games will reinforce skills that are taught everyday in our kindergarten classroom such as letters and sounds, rhyming, reading and spelling.
