My Students

My students complete a literacy and technology project once the AP test has been taken in May. I strive to find books centered around mathematics to use with them. I currently do not have enough books for my students and would love to expand our classroom library. Thank you!

I teach AP Calculus.

We are at a public school in California. We have neighborhood kids, bussed in kids, and military kids, all of which are represented in my classes. This is the highest level math course offered at our school and the doors are open to everyone who wants to tackle the challenge. I love teaching AP Calculus. After learning all the required concepts, and practicing for our AP exam, I look for different, challenging activities to end the school year. Last year was the first time we completed the Literacy & Technology project, and the results were amazing. My students are very creative and worked collaboratively to create songs, commercials, and movie trailers about the books they read. It was nice to see my students excited about reading a "math" book, but also to see their creative sides that sometimes get lost in the daily routine of note-taking and practice problems.

My Project

I am challenged to create meaningful activities for my students after the AP test has been taken. They feel as if they have completed the major requirements of the course at this time. We need 20 copies Five Equations That Changed the World and 15 copies of The housekeeper and the Professor. Students will use these books to complete a literacy project after the AP test has been taken. The literacy project supported by these books is a break from the norm, which also asks my students to use skills learned in their other classes, namely English and Multimedia. In the past, my students have enjoyed this activity more than they anticipated. The two titles I have requested for my students come highly recommended. I had five copies of "The Housekeeper and the Professor" and the kids really enjoyed the book and related to it. I don't currently have enough copies to use with all my math classes. "The Five Equations that Changed the World" has also come highly recommended from my peers. Both of these books show math in the "real world", outside the confines of our classroom. This literacy project allows me to show my students that math is useful in their everyday lives, not just for memorization.

Many of my students have never read a "math" book, other than their textbook, and many of them rarely read their math textbook.

My students also complain that after the AP test, many of their teachers allow them to do nothing during class. I cannot bring myself to waste that precious time with them. I look at this activity as a different challenge for them, to incorporate literacy into their math classroom. I do not have the funds to purchase a variety of books for my students.
