This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are from a large, urban city that is plagued with crime and violence. Many of my students are affected by the problems of our city and school is a way for them to escape. Our school district is the third largest in our state, where 62 percent of our students are of Hispanic origin, 28 percent are African-American and approximately 10 percent are of Caucasian, Middle Eastern or Asian descent and more than ninety percent of students receive free or reduced priced lunches. Nearly 50 percent of all students in our school district speak a primary language other than English, with a total of 37 languages spoken throughout the district. Many of my students are living in the United States for the first time and must deal with becoming acclimated to life in the United States. I have taught students from Ghana, Dominican Republic, Chile, Guyana, Columbia, Mexico and Portugal.

My Project

These materials will help my students feel good about obtaining the Honor Roll, Principal's List and achieving good grades in math class. Many times, during Report Card Night, we don't acknowledge the students that have done well for the marking period. These materials will help with student's self-esteem and encourage them to do better in math. These awards will help parents feel proud about their child.

I want to show my students that math is fun, math is achievable and success in math is possible.

The awards given will prove to my students they are truly a success in math.
