Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Kindergarten in a rural NC PK-5 school. Approximately 83% of the children who attend our school receive free or reduced lunch and approximately 51% of our students are Hispanic. Due to our high Hispanic population and low socio-economic status, my students often come to school not having basic math skills like color and shape recognition, sorting, patterning, and number recognition. Many of our children's parents do not feel comfortable coming into the classroom to see what the children are learning and how we teach the children to do these things. Many parents also cannot, either due to jobs or ability, help the children with paper and pencil type homework in math. It is for this reason that I ask for the ETA School 'N' Home math kit, the numbers pocket chart and time tracker. With these materials, my classroom of 22 students could take a hands-on approach to math and allow as many as 12 students each night to take home the same materials that they were using in the classroom. They would be able to learn colors and time intervals with the lighted time tracker and practice manipulating numbers in the numbers pocket chart then take home a backpack full of goodies to "teach" Mom and Dad what they've learned that day in class. The materials associated with this project could be used for many years to come and help promote math skills in hundreds of children.
