My students need dry erase boards and markers to visualize and write as they problem solve in math. They need a break from paper and pencil tasks to help them stay engaged!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are energetic and curious children who live in a high poverty, high density urban area. They often have limited experiences outside of this urban environment. They love learning and need to widen their background knowledge to help them engage in challenging academic subjects. They come to school looking for us to provide many of the basics they need for success. My students are lucky to be in a school with many community partners and nearby arts and cultural resources. They love learning and embrace opportunity and adventure with open hearts and wide smiles.
My Project
My students need the chance to explore and use materials that allow them to move about, take notes and think creatively as they work to learn math. We use whiteboards to visualize our thoughts, take notes for discussion, work independently at stations and to "jigsaw" individual work into a class response
The ephemeral quality of the white board allows students to experiment, to try and then let it go to try again; these materials allow us to develop a growth mindset.
These whiteboards, magnetic math materials, markers and erasers will assist students with thinking both logically and abstractly, to count, calculate, measure and more. Writing, drawing and working it out in math will be a whole lot more fun with these materials on hand!
