My students need these ammeters and materials to build models of solar batteries. My math and science team works together to create awesome integrated STEM and engineering projects for our students.
My students come into my classroom everyday full of energy, ready to learn, and excited for what we will do in science today! I have many students who need hands on, concrete experiences to help them with science concepts.
I teach in a rural area in Florida with a high minority population and many of my students are on the free and reduced meal program.
All of our feeder schools are Title I schools and our science lab is always in need of materials to help my students have authentic science experiences. Despite these challenges we have a strong science program and always represent our school well in our regional and state science fairs.
I work with an awesome team of teachers, and our hope is to obtain laboratory materials that will help our students explore human impacts on the earth and environmental concepts that will help them learn ways to make a difference and become good stewards of the earth.
My Project
This project will be a STEM Engineering challenge to build working models of a solar cell. Our science and math departments plan projects together that allow the students to apply our standards and use their education in real world situations . Students will design and build a solution to convert solar energy into electricity with the materials provided, and test the power provided by their solar battery with the ammeters. They will use their math standards to calculate proportions for amps created / needed to run electrical devices, write equations for the number of solar batteries needed for the required power, and calculate the total materials needed to build such a battery.
Most of the materials for this project will be re-usable, and students in future classes and other science / math teams will also be reached with this STEM Engineering project.
One of my goals in my science classroom is to teach my students about alternative energy sources and being good stewards of the Earth and our environment. This project will encourage students to explore alternative energy resources, design and build real world solutions, and see how to apply them to everyday life for a brighter and cleaner energy future.
