Math and Science Measuring Tools

My Project

My classroom is set in an outlying Native Alaskan school on Prince of Wales Island in Alaska. Research has shown that my students thrive on play based education and hands-on learning, so I try to incorporate the natural environment as much as possible in our lessons.

Our little school of 70 students is located within walking distance of ocean, estuary, river, forest and bog environments.

We will be doing a fair amount of measuring this year. Students will be building machines out of pencils and tape to fling a binder clip, then they will measure the distance traveled over ten trials. They will process the data by graphing, and finding measures of tendency such as the mean and median. Math and science students will need calculators, rulers, and compasses for their courses, as well as pencils to write with. We will also do a beach walk measurement activity where students choose a species of kelp or bivalve to study.
