Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a rural school, with a majority of students coming from a low socio-economic background. Even with all these so called "negatives that hold them back", they are the sweetest kids that love to be at school. Parents, families, and students are appreciative of education and value hard work.
These are kids that are excited to learn and actually beg for homework!
My students love to work collaboratively and help each other learn. We establish a "growth mindset" mentality at the beginning of the year and from there, students are on fire to stretch their brains and master 5th Grade Common Core Math and Florida Science Standards!!!
My Project
My students need more materials for math and science. In science, they need engaging magazines that will not only get them excited to read about science but also increase their fluency and comprehension. These articles can be integrated into their reading lessons so they are getting science and reading at the same time! The full color articles and current topics will hook them into reading.
Having real manipuatives that they can fill and pour will help my students with liquid measurement conversions.
Many of my students lack the hands-on experiences that would help them when it comes to math concepts. Using the pattern blocks and plastic containers will help them make connections to the math they are doing on paper.
