Math and Reading Skill Building Games for Successful Students
Help me give my students language and math games to help solidify math and reading skills during center work and teaching tools to teach those valuable and important life skills.
Our elementary school is a great school. We have a very diverse population. 48 percent of our students are of a non-white race or culture, which makes our school so special because of the diversity each culture brings. At any given time we have between 45-53 percent of our students classified as low income families. We have had students who are homeless and struggle to have things other students take for granted.
Our 24 second grade students are very bright and eager to learn.
Some have significant challenges and they rise above them and excel despite their circumstances. They are eager to learn and progress. They pull together as a class to help and build each other up. We often hear them compliment and encourage each other.
We have taught here for 22 years and have seen many changes but the thing that has stayed consistent is the quality of educators and the education provided these wonderful students.
My Project
Students love to play games and use manipulatives to help them in their learning process. Games help to reinforce and solidify concepts taught in reading and math. In our classroom we have center work for both reading and math that the students can work on during their small group time.
Who doesn't love to play games, and what better way to learn than by doing something different and fun.
We have requested vocabulary match up games to help students with understanding synonyms, antonyms, homophones, context clues, and multi meaning words. We have also requested some items for teaching math and games to practice the skills of addition, subtraction, time, money ,and place value. Children learn by doing and games really help children gain valuable skills by doing what children do best--playing. Center work reinforces skills being taught and provides hands on experience to significantly aid in understanding.
