This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are from low-income families that are of Hispanic and African-American descent. A majority of my students speak two languages and struggle with the transitions between the languages. Some students cannot afford basic school supplies, get a good night's sleep, or concentrate on their educational success due to home issues that some adults never have to think about. My students need stability and consistency daily, and I try to provide this with a daily routine.
It is my job to provide a safe and effective environment for a successful academic future.
I focus on the needs of each of my students through small groups and one-on-one work. It is my goal to keep students engaged and focused while in small groups. I have to be very creative with this due to our school's limited funding for extra materials. These materials would help my students stay focused and productive during their center time.
My Project
My students are extremely excited to be back in the classroom and ready to learn. However, they are lacking some basic skills that I need to support after having taught them. My students are limited with the materials they have so I want to give them daily math journals and reading comprehension cards to help build their skills.
The math journals are essential practice that will help reinforce the skills that I have taught to the whole group and the reading comprehension cards are a great way for the students to work together to build each other up through reading.
Both math and reading are such important skills for students to master. They should be exposed and taught a variety of different methods to comprehend and master each of these skills. Students should also be accountable for their own learning and providing my students with the journals and cards with help them do just that.
The more materials I can provide to my students, the more they will learn and grow. Each child deserves their own materials which they can manipulate and demonstrate their understanding.
